THE TECHNIQUE

AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU

Good health is priceless and this technique lays the best possible foundation for good health’
– Patrick Macdonald, author and Alexander teacher.

The simple idea at the core of the Technique is that unnecessary tension which has built up in our bodies unnoticed over the years, and which is now causing discomfort and pain, can be released.

The tension is caused by unconscious habits we develop in daily living which have become part of how we walk, sit, stand and work, and which are difficult to change.

The Technique helps bring about this change. Guidance from a teacher, involving simple practical work and on-going discussion, results in being able to “let go” of this tension’s grip on muscles and joints, allowing greater mobility and ease.

‘After seeing Carol I feel I have more space in my body, as if I’d been living in cramped conditions before’.    W.L.

The Technique is learned in an integrated, wholistic  way in a series of sessions where we look at how you stand and move and guide you towards regaining better balance and an increased sense of feeling more alert and alive.

Alexander teaching  is recognised by the NHS as being beneficial for people living with Parkinson’s, with back and neck pain, and is taught to musicians as part of their training.

It can bring about improvement to performance skills of all kinds and is frequently used by actors, including Juliet Stevenson, Ben Whishaw, Helen Bonham-Carter, Ralph Fiennes and George Bernard Shaw.
